Assessment
Are you looking for ways to track your client’s motor speech progression? The assessments below will not only help you establish a baseline, but you’ll be able to measure and demonstrate your progress. You are not required to have completed any PROMPT training to use these assessments, but they are particularly useful for those who are PROMPT-trained.
We will be adding more assessments as they become available.

The Probe Words Assessment is a criterion-based method used to assess a client’s motor speech control and can be used by SLPs in a variety of settings, including schools, clinics, hospitals, universities and private practices. It can be used to assess speech motor skills, aid in differential diagnosis and provide a measure of change over time regardless of treatment method. It also helps the clinician to identify three priorities for treatment, determine if those priorities are appropriate and evaluate if treatment is producing the desired result. Due to the technical knowledge required to score the assessment, it can only be administered by SLPs.
Although the Probe Words were developed utilizing the PROMPT Motor Speech Hierarchy, they can be used with any treatment approach. Given this development, you will often see them referred to as Motor Speech Hierarchy Probe Words or MSH-PW.
This assessment was designed to be used for children two and up and adults with speech impairments. Learn more about the product specifics and watch as we show you how to score two children in this video demo.
It took 15 years to develop these valid, reliable and specific rules for scoring. "Development and Validation of a Probe Word List to Assess Speech Motor Skills in Children" is the award-winning research behind Probe Words and is featured in the American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology. WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING
PROMPT Probe Words assessment has been an essential part of my clinical practice. I have used it for assessment, understanding where to start treatment on the Motor Speech Hierarchy and as a guide for choosing my therapy goals. I like that the Probe Words are a standardized measure for motor speech control and has a high level of evidenced-based research to support this.
I have been able to measure the progress of my clients motor speech development by comparing pre- and post-treatment videos. I have seen progress for “untrained words” or words and phrases that I did not target in therapy.
An added benefit is the ability to train parents by reviewing the video of their child. Together we watched the motor breakdown and discussed how to use the “correct verbal motor-based feedback” to correct their child’s motor speech breakdown.
The Probe Words assessment contains functional and familiar vocabulary that the client has seen or used many times. It’s very quick to administer and gives me immediate, relevant feedback.
I have had the benefit of using PROMPT Probe Words for a few years now and this has been my go-to Motor Speech Assessment. I recommend this product for its ease of administration, functional uses, setting appropriate goals and the ability to measure changes in my clients after intervention.
