Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets (PROMPT) is an approach that provides an evidenced-based framework and skills to carefully assess your clients’ Physical-Sensory, Cognitive-Linguistic and Social Emotional Domains. PROMPT goes beyond motor speech by taking into consideration how clients understand and use language as well as how they socially interact with others. This framework assists in identifying individual strengths and weaknesses. This allows you to assess and treat the whole client. Different levels of PROMPT technique (Parameter, Surface, Complex, Syllable) are key components of treatment that can be applied to improve social interaction, language as well as motor speech skills in your practice. When you participate in PROMPT training you walk away with in-depth training in individualized comprehensive assessment, treatment planning and implementation to help your clients achieve the best possible outcomes.

To become PROMPT Certified, a clinician must complete four essential steps to be able to fully understand the PROMPT technique and apply it appropriately to clients/patients. The training below is only available to speech therapists that are legally eligible to both assess and treat in their area. The coursework is designed for those that have already acquired masters degree level skills and knowledge.

Step 1 (Outside US and Canada)
Introduction to PROMPT: Technique

In this course you receive specialized training from a PROMPT Instructor with extensive clinical   experience that you can apply right away. Following the completion of this course you will be  able to immediately use different levels of PROMPT technique (Parameter, Surface and Complex) in your practice. In other words, you will be able to use your hands to help clients move their articulators. You will walk away with an understanding of dynamic systems, treating the whole child, and applying the PROMPT assessment and treatment planning process.

Intro primarily focuses on the motor speech system (Physical-Sensory Domain). Highlights include an evidenced-based framework for identifying motor breakdowns, determining treatment targets, designing treatment sessions, applying technique through interactive case studies and practice opportunities. Easy-to-use resources are provided to allow you to put what you learn into practice. Once completed, caregivers can find you on our website as being PROMPT trained, which can help you grow your practice.

This 3-day workshop is available through in-person or instructor-led Zoom workshops.

In the US and Canada, we are piloting a new 2-day version of the workshop that we refer to as "Level 1" described below.

Step 1 (US and Canada only)

Introduction to PROMPT Assessment, Treatment Planning, and Technique

This is a 2-day, in-person course with approximately 30-60 minutes of online prework. At the conclusion of this course, you will be able to implement PROMPT with your clients. Only licensed Speech-Language Pathologists are eligible to take this course.

Participants must agree to abide by the terms and conditions of the course, which includes fingernails being at PROMPT therapeutic length.

This course focuses on the motor speech system and includes an evidenced-based framework for identifying motor breakdowns, determining treatment targets, designing treatment sessions, and applying the four levels of technique (Parameter, Surface, Complex, and Syllable PROMPTs). Following the completion of this course you will be able to immediately use the four levels of PROMPT technique in your practice.

You develop PROMPT assessment and therapy skills through interactive case studies and practice opportunities. Easy-to-use resources are provided to allow you to put what you learn into practice with your clients. Once you have completed Level 1, caregivers can find you through our website to verify your level of training which can help you grow your practice.

Step 2: The PROMPT Technique Practicum Project (Practicum Project)

This self-study project will provide you an opportunity to showcase and improve your ability to apply the PROMPT assessment, plan treatment and implement your treatment plan. You are required to choose a client on your caseload, record a 3-minute spontaneous sample, complete the System Analysis Observation (SAO), choose three priorities on the Motor Speech Hierarchy (MSH), complete the Development of Motor Speech Goals and Session Development form and record you implementing your treatment plan with your client. Once submitted, you receive detailed constructive feedback and recommendations regarding your assessment, treatment planning and treatment implementation skills, which includes technique. This project is not pass/fail, but is required for you to complete before you move on to the PROMPT Certification Project.

Step 3: Bridging PROMPT Technique to Intervention (Bridging)

In this course you receive advanced training from a PROMPT Instructor that will take your ability to implement PROMPT assessment and treatment to the next level. You receive specialized training in the Global Domain Evaluation (GDE), which will give you the evidenced-based framework and skills to carefully assess your clients’ Physical-Sensory, Cognitive-Linguistic and Social Emotional Domains. This will allow you to assess and treat the whole client.

Highlights include applying the GDE, the three uses of PROMPT, support strategies, goal writing, and technique to real-world clinical cases. You will walk away with in-depth training in individualized comprehensive assessment, treatment planning and implementation to help your clients achieve the best possible outcomes. Once completed caregivers can find you on our website as being Bridging trained, which highlights your advanced training and can help you grow your practice.

This course is available in-person and virtually.

This 3-day workshop is available through in-person or instructor-led Zoom workshops.

Step 4: PROMPT Technique Certification: A Self-Study Project (PROMPT Certification Project )

In order for you to participate in the PROMPT Certification Project you need to complete the following three steps: Introduction to PROMPT: Technique course, Technique Practicum Project, and Bridging PROMPT Technique to Intervention course. This self-study project requires you to choose a client on your caseload, complete the Global Domain Evaluation, complete treatment planning and demonstrate treatment implementation and adjustments over time (four-month period). Once submitted, you receive detailed constructive feedback and recommendations regarding your assessment, treatment planning and treatment implementation skills, which includes technique from a PROMPT instructor. This is a pass/fail project. In order to pass you need to achieve 80% accuracy in three areas: PROMPT approach and system, positioning and technique, and treatment planning and final analysis. Completing this project indicates you have achieved one of the highest levels of training possible.

Supplemental Training

The PROMPT Institute offers specialized supplemental online training and study groups to extend your PROMPT expertise to different client populations as well as improve various aspects of PROMPT technique and treatment. Case study courses are online courses that are listed by age and diagnoses so you can see how PROMPT instructors assess, develop treatment plans and provide therapy to different populations. Content courses range from Complex PROMPTs to Selecting Motor Phoneme Links. You are in charge of your learning. You pick the topic and learn at your own pace through demonstration and activities developed by PROMPT Instructors when it works for you, in the environment you choose.

Study Groups are listed on our workshop schedule.
